Introduction

My name is Luke Tomasello and I am currently employed with InterTrust Technologies Corporation. As employee #19, I have been closely involved with nearly all aspects Digital Rights Management.

I have extensive experience in the Design and Architecture of software systems.
I have built many systems including Imaging, Optical Character Recognition, Digital Rights Management, sophisticated Graphical User Interface applications, Languages, Interpreters, System Services, and Online Gaming.

In addition to 20 years software design experience, I also have 4 years experience in the area of patent infringement analysis.
This expertise in patent patent infringement analysis helped Intertrust realize real value from their patent portfolio as I c
ontributed approximately 1/3 of the patent infringement claims used in a 2002 patent infringement lawsuit against Microsoft. Microsoft settled this patent-infringement lawsuit for $440 million in our favor. (google: intertrust vs Microsoft) I also played a key role in the research and analysis for the successful outcome of the October 2003 InterTrust vs Macrovision Patent Interference. (google: intertrust Macrovision interference )

My primary contribution to InterTrust and the companies preceding, has been that of Inventor.

I conceived of, designed, and implemented, much of the foundational technology used in InterTrust's Commerce Product for the design, layout and interpretation of protected content.

SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

In brief, since I have been at InterTrust:

  1. Key role as technical analyst providing important claims of infringement against Microsoft. These claims helped lead to a $440 million settlement in our favor.
  2. Key role as technical analyst providing important proof of our claim that we were 'first to invent' in our October 2003 InterTrust vs Macrovision Patent Interference. (google: Intertrust Macrovision interference )
  3. Submitted 3 new patent applications to Intertrust for review. (Not yet public.)
  4. invented/designed/implemented DigiBox Templates, the template interpreter, and the first Layout Editor for protected content organization. Patent Number(s) 5,920,861 and 6,138,119.
  5. invented/designed/implemented The Rights Metafile Format (RMF), and the first Commerce ModelerThis state-of-the-art tool was the first know graphical tool for constructing arbitrarily complex business rules to govern access to protected content. (patent application under development.)
  6. invented/and initial design of the RMF Compiler to convert these meta business rules into interpreted byte codes.
  7. designed/implemented all the imaging, printing and rendering code for our Content Viewer application.
  8. designed/implemented first protected Content Packager application.
  9. designed/implemented MIME auto detection utility
  10. designed various mechanisms for use by our other applications. I.e., dynamic DLL resolution.
  11. designed/implemented an error code compiler and lookup tool for managing source code errors in a human readable way.
  12. designed/implemented various libraries in use today including common User interface components for things like AboutBoxes, Splash Screens, and Sounds.
  13. designed/implemented a proprietary software Setup Program that used 'key-lock encryption to protect the files for distribution.

Before InterTrust I was employed by Xerox and reported to the Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Advanced Office Documents division.

I authored several inventions while at AODS, including ScanStation.

ScanStation was digital copier prototype that utilized several state-of-the-art Xerox PARC inventions including: Glyph Recognition, OCR, Compound Document Construction, and advanced Image Processing.
When the then CEO of Xerox came to PARC to review the work going on there, ScanStation was one of the featured items.

Before working at Xerox, I spent 5 years working at Calera Recognition Systems building applications for Optical Character Recognition.

My most notable contribution at Calera was the invention of FaxGrabber.

I Invented, designed, and built a state-of-the-art utility that would automatically receive incoming faxes, then convert them, via Optical Character Recognition, to the users favorite word-processor format. This was all done automatically and in the background.

Bill Gates demo'ed FaxGrabber in his keynote address at 1992 Spring COMDEX in Chicago.
